Maxine didn’t have a garden she lived in a condo
Came over to my house after school and we’d go

Walking for cans, looking for cans

So punk-rock wasn’t new to me my grandma dived in dumpsters
Brought home treasures for the family-My father shook his head
As she offered him a beer-found in her favorite place
Drink up she said-there’s nothing wrong with it

I learned class from my grandma, what you offer me I’ll take it
I learned it from my Grandma

When Maxine grew up her parents weren’t around
She rooted for the underdog-whenever there was a game on
She gave me a drink at 13-said if its all-right with you father
She drank Manhattans,-it’s all-right with me

I learned it from my Grandma,
It’s never really too early

Maxine taught me god is love it lead to confusion later on-When I met Christians
she helped me light a candle on the alter
the church was dark and cool
there were mostly old people there and after church we’d go

walking for cans, looking for cans
learned stewardship of the land
collecting cans

At her funeral the priest he had written a poem
Entitled Tin Can Lady, she was somewhat well known
I think of her often and every now and then
I get the urge to get pick up a ________


In school they teach you if we all act in our own self interest
It will be best for everyone involved

I learned resistence from my grandma
Tell my teachers I don’t believe you
