lyrics

The sun was just breakig over the Montana rockies
As I passed anaconda and headed back east
Coming into butte my backside was aching
Though I’d been welded right there to the seat

Finding a place in Butte MT
At 5am isn’t easy to do
But I saw the neon and with some trepidation
I figured that it just would have to do

I was thinking
Isn’t it amazing what they’re doing with plastics
If I hadn’t of known better I’d of thought is was wood
The whole world is changing and I know it scares you
I know you’d stop it if only you could

She was sitting at the edge of a formica counter
Gazing at the blender with a souful blank stare
Per pantsuit was made of checked polyester
It clung to her bulges and set off her white hair

She ordered coffee and when no one was looking
Took out a pint from her oversized purse
Poured out a strong on replaced the bottle
Took a long pull and let out a low curse

I was thinking
Isn’t it amazing what they’re doing with plastics
If I hadn’t of known better I’d of thought is was wood
The whole world is changing and I know it scares you
I know you’d stop it if only you could

My omelet came it was made with velvetta
I wondered if the eggs had ever been laid
She got up from the counter
Walked over to my table
Carrying a photo of one of her better days

There were to people in that black and white photo
Two in the uniform of the army aircorp
And two young women I guess she was one
That was the night before they all went to war

She talked of that night and the years that came after
And the young man who never came home
How all her good times were now mostly bad times
How she can’t get over feeling alone

I was thinking
Isn’t it amazing what they’re doing with plastics
If I hadn’t of known better I’d of thought is was wood
The whole world is changing and I know it scares you
I know you’d stop it if only you could

I watched her eyes and they moved slowly
From the counter to the floor and then over to me
I tried to listen but she wasn’t quite talking
She wandered back over to her counter seat

Back at the counter she forgot about the coffee
Poured out another one stronger than before
Took a long pull then told the waitree
Nothing is worth a damn anymore

Waitress nodded and made some more coffee
Wiped up a splill from off of the floor
As I got up from my talbe
She laid her head on the counter
I waved she smiled and I walked out the door

I was thinking
Isn’t it amazing what they’re doing with plastics
If I hadn’t of known better I’d of thought is was wood
The whole world is changing and I know it scares you
I know you’d stop it if only you could
