--- Leaving Charleston ---
Written by Kyle Evans
Evelyn's daddy was a son of a bitch
he was an alcoholic and he beat the kids
so we swore we'd leave the day she turned 15
borrowed her sister's car and pointed it west
thinking anywhere was better than the place we left
and the note we left her parents only said
We're riding towards the sun
Leaving Charleston
Me and her were done with everything
We will try baby
try to do the best we can
and we will ride baby
ride into the promised land
Lived in that beater for a couple of weeks
and we took some dirty pictures for some food to eat
it was bad but it was better than before
Every evening I would lie there awake
watching how the streetlights hit her face
and I'd fall asleep against her shoulderblade
Rising with the sun
Out of Charleston
Me and her were done with everything
We will try baby
try to do the best we can
and we will ride baby
ride into the promised land
Sold off the car to try make our ends meet
Evie spent her nights working on the streets
And we moved into a Greyhound terminal
Every tomorrow could be better I think
when she wanders back and is next to me
I just hold her close and whisper in her ear
Forget about the sun
We're out of Charleston
Me and her were done with everything
We will try baby
try to do the best we can
and we will ride baby
ride into the promised land

It's been
seven months since
I heard my baby
on the phone
Cradling
the receiver
listening to the
dialtone
Operator get me Caroline
I gotta talk with my baby tonight
I promised her that it would be all right
Operator get me Caroline
Every
bone in my body
wants to only
be with you
But I
get no answer
just the answer
ing machine
Operator get me Caroline
I gotta talk with my baby tonight
I promised her that it would be all right
Operator get me Caroline
Oh my
darling Carrie
you're so very
far from me
Oh my
darling Carrie
only sixteen
months old
Operator get me Caroline
I gotta talk with my baby tonight
I promised everything would be all right

--- Evangeline ---
Morning's wasted on the picture on the wall
that slowly reappears the moments after dawn
Every day I see you looking back at me
at the boy I am and the man I couldn't be
15 years I swung that hammer
Baby all I had was time
Evangeline, tell me it all was just a dream
You won't believe what all the time has done to me
The man you loved so long ago's all torn and faded
and there's nothing left inside of him not full of hatred
but let's make the best of what is left
I'm violent and I'm sad
they took the best years that I had
and left an empty shell
they picked off like a scab
I'm a child at 34
mopping up some liquor store
lying awake at night
afraid of dying alone
15 years I swung that hammer
Baby all I had was time
Evangeline, tell me it all was just a dream
You won't believe what all the time has done to me
That afternoon you married me in that grove of pine trees
in my darkest hours that memory was all that saved me
so let's make the best of what is left
Evangeline, tell me it all was just a dream
You won't believe what all the time has done to me
If you've moved along I'd never think you less a person
but your heart still has a place for me of that I'm certain
so let's make the best of what is left

--- Willingham ---
It was over like that
burnt the house to the ground
two days 'til Christmas in a faraway town
They found him there on the curb
covered in soot
'sterically screaming that the fire had took
his 3 little girls turned to ash in his hands
These are the ways that you bury a man
These are the ways
The pieces didn't add up
they said he showed no remorse/regret/wasn't sad enough
They hauled the man in and manufactured a story
They said he tucked 'em all in
and barricaded the doors
and squirted some lighter fluid over the floor
Stood on the sidewalk like a piece of white trash
and let the house burn into cinders and ash
These are the ways
The D.A. laid it all out
he'd had a pitiful life
a cracker mechanic who would beat up his wife
Saved his piece of shit car
instead of rescuing his kids
only the highest of punishments for what he had did
These are the ways that justice pays for the truth (that we interpret the truth)
an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
These are the ways
In a faraway town
I think of him then
Hysterically screaming as the needle goes in
And then all you can hear
is the beat of his chest
gradually slowing with each shallower breath
These are the ways you make a dog of a man
The blood in the water is on all of our hands

Texas Two

--- The Texas Two ---
We met in a juvie hall
in April, 1983
Billy Joe was beautiful
all dirty blonde and tattered jeans
We were dumb and perfect just
a greasy pair of Indians
dreaming of the life we had to lead
We lived in a halfway house
in August when we got released
At 10 when all the lights went out
I'd spend the night beneath his wings
I'd hold him 'til the morning came
he'd hold me 'til he fell asleep
wake up cradled in each other's arms
We loved life and outlaws and
each other more than anything
than either of us thought we could
than either of us could believe
But every love is different than (from)
the one before - some settle down,
some say they'll become the Texas Two
Billy was the muscle and the
heart behind the enterprise
I made the plan the night before
my head against his sleeping thigh
he took out the rent-a-cop
but when I heard the sirens ring we
ran without a dollar to our names
We went to a motel in the
next town with a case of beer
hid out shooting Polaroids
him mugging in the bathroom mirror
stayed up reading newspapers
combing through the crime reports for
any mention of the Texas Two
Nothing much in my life ever
made much sense, Love and guns and
violence were all I ever
really knew of happiness
But neither of us wanted to grow
old like this, but living life
together was the only thing we'd need
We stayed in the hideaway for
several days just waiting for the
heat to pass until we heard a
knock upon the motel door
The voice outside assured us that they
had the place surrounded and to
lay down and surrender to the law
As we heard the door break in
I froze and looked in Billy's eyes
all I saw was love and fear and
lips slowly begin to smile and
taking out a pistol he just
started shooting everywhere
first and last stand of the Texas Two
Bleeding on the floor I thought that
nothing much had really changed
I was still a coward and my
Billy was still dumb and brave
As I slowly drifted off I
reached for him and held his hand and
watched the fire die behind his eyes

Revenge

--- Revenge ---
I woke up in a roadside Holiday Inn
beneath a dusty ceiling fan
got out of bed and stretched my aching legs
and washed the night off of my hands
I counted 1, 2, 3, 4, bruises on my knuckles
and appreciated the pain
and watched the dirt and mud and blood and sin
swirling slowly down the drain
And if you ask me why I did it
I will answer with a grin
it was revenge
He was a child molester and he lived alone
in a cabin out by the lake
and everybody knew it but a'nobody could prove it
so we decided to set him straight
I thought of it as some community service
a bullet would do the trick
but it'd be way too loud and it'd be way too messy
and it'd be over way too quick
And if you ask me why I did it
I will answer with a grin
it was revenge
Rolled the window down in my El Dorado
for some fresh air on my face
and in the seat beside me there's a rope and a hammer
and a soggy old suitcase
and I beat the rhythm of Waylon Jennings
on the cracking steering wheel
singing right there with me "I just can't help
the way that I don't feel"
And if you ask me why I did it
I will answer with a grin
it was revenge
I pulled up to my cousin's funeral parlor
in the middle of the night
and we dragged the suitcase to the basement furnace
and we threw it all inside
And I watched it burning through a little window
'til it melted all away
and then we went upstairs to eat an early breakfast
and get ready for the day
And if you ask me why I did it
I will answer with a grin
it was revenge

Baby from this ferris wheel
our sleeping city's
lit up like a Christmas tree
from blinking TV's
playing out old reruns to the night
We will drive the Aerostar
back home from memory
and fall asleep to TV shows
just now beginning
never wanting nothing more
But hey, though we're orbiting round
seems like we only head towards the ground
OK - we'll start a new verse
but instead of just falling
the wheel will reverse
We could drive the car all night
to Motor City
and find another ferris wheel
and set it spinning
and watch while Detroit echos and blooms
But hey, though we're orbiting round
seems like we only head towards the ground
OK - we'll start a new verse
but instead of just falling
the wheel will reverse
I don't want to live my life
alone and jaded
thinking love turns people old
all worn and faded
never wanting nothing more
But hey, though we're orbiting round
seems like we only head towards the ground
OK - we'll start a new verse
but instead of just falling
the wheel will reverse

--- The Businessman ---
Elevator elevator take me to the 22nd floor
Take me through this quiet building, slowly pause and open up the door
Dying in American suburbia for supervisor’s pay
18 years spent working for the government in Washington Dee Cee
Every day another stream of car, work, sleep, reeee peeeeeet
Huddled with a phone receiver whispering to an answering machine
Don't wait up for me, you'll feel better in the morning if you sleep
Amy disagrees, but she drifts off anyway and waits to dream
Distantly the echoes of explosions bring our businessman around
Washington's a smoldering ruin, a siren is the only other sound
Walking calmly back inside he switches on the radio to hear
Don't wait up for me, you'll feel better in the morning if you sleep
Amy disagrees, but she drifts off anyway and waits to dream
My family albums filled with pictures looking back at
me, I've found I'm ready for the sea
Elevator elevator take me to the parking garage door
Take me to the beach and find the businessman all lined up down the shore
Ankle-deep in quiet water holding out their flashlights to the sea
Don't wait up for me, you'll feel better in the morning if you sleep
Amy disagrees, but she drifts off anyway and waits to dream
